캣툴로 작업을 해달라는 의뢰를 받은 적이 있습니다.
캣툴 사용을 권하지 않는 이상 대개 직접 번역을 하는 편이라 이 요청에 약간 거부감이 있었던 것도 사실입니다. 통역번역대학원 수업에서 처음 캣툴을 접했을 때 복잡해 보이는 작업창과 배우면 배울수록 어려운 기능들에 약간 겁을 먹었던 것 같습니다. 이걸 배울 시간에 한 글자라도 더 번역을 하자는 생각이 컸죠. 하지만 피할 수 없었기에 이참에 나도 제대로 사용해보자는 생각이 들어 캣툴로 번역 작업을 해보니 생각보다 편한 점이 많았습니다. 작업하는 동안 캣툴에 대한 개인적인 생각이 많이 바뀌게 되어 동료 번역사에게도 캣툴을 추천하게 되었습니다. 그렇게 이야기 주제가 자연스럽게 캣툴로 이어져 한차례 캣툴에 대한 토론의 장을 펼치게 되었습니다.
*캣툴(CAT Tool) : Computer Assisted Translation Tool의 약자로써 컴퓨터를 사용한 번역을 말합니다. 주로 번역 지원 프로그램을 일컫습니다.

혹시 다들 캣툴 가지고 있어?

난 지금 체험판 써보고 있어. 아직까지는 웹소설 비중이 커서 살 생각이 없었는데, 최근에 캣툴을 사용해달라는 요청이 있어서 일단 체험판으로 사용해보고 있어.
SANTA
나는 통대 졸업할 때 할인 받아서 샀는데, 아직 한 번도 안 써 봤어. 생각보다 잘 안 쓰게 되더라고.

내가 최근에 받은 프로젝트가 공역자가 많아서 캣툴을 사용해 달라고 하더라고. 우리 학교에서 트 * * * 배웠잖아. 이번에 사용한 건 다른 프로그램이긴 한데 기능은 트 * * * 랑 비슷했어. 생각보다 편하더라고. 공역자가 이미 번역한 부분에서 사용한 용어가 제시되니까 용어 통일도 쉽고 일치율이 높은 문장은 금방 처리할 수도 있고.

맞아. 나도 최근에 써보니까 포맷이 일정한 문서라서 그런지 편하긴 하더라. 그런데 항상 쓰는 기능만 쓰게 돼. 통대 캣툴 수업에서 진짜 많은 기능을 배웠던 것 같은데…

나는 캣툴 수업도 따로 선택하지 않아서 그런지 프로그램 구입하고 한 번 켜봤는데 뭔가 복잡해 보이더라. 실제 사용은 별로 어렵지 않은가 봐?
DANA
일단 기본적인 기능만 익숙해지면 별로 어렵지 않아. 뭐가 많긴 한데 정말 쓰는 기능만 쓰고, 사실 그 기능만으로도 충분히 효율적인 작업이 되더라고.
LATTE
나는 캣툴 첫인상이 별로 좋지는 않았어. 일단 켜면 화면에 뭐가 많잖아. 그래서 처음에는 아직 내가 낯설어서 그런 것이겠지 생각했는데, 사실 수업 때 배우고 요즘 사용을 하면서도 프로그램을 처음 열었을 때의 뭔가 복잡하고 어려워 보이는 느낌은 여전해. UI 같은 게 좀 개선되면 좋을 텐데…(ㅎㅎ) 기능을 조금 간소화 해도 좋을 것 같고. 아니면 자주 쓰는 기능을 따로 모아서 도구창으로 보여 준다든지. 원 클릭으로 실행되도록.(ㅎㅎ)

맞아. 진짜 복잡 하더라고. 이거 파악할 시간에 한 글자라도 더 빨리 번역하는 게 낫겠다는 생각까지 했다니까. 그리고 뭔가 새로운 것을 배워야 한다는 것에 대해 두려움 이랄까, 그런 거부감이 좀 있는 것 같아. 귀찮은 것일 수도 있는데, 약간 이거 배울 시간에 지금 내 앞에 닥친 번역을 한 글자라도 더 하는게 좋겠다는 생각이 들었어.

(ㅎㅎ)실제로 우리 수업 시간에 배우면서도 고급 기능으로 갈수록 그 기능을 찾기까지 오래 걸리니까 "이 시간에 그냥 타자 쳐서 번역했으면 다 했겠다.” 이런 말 정말 많이 했잖아. 물론 기능을 배우고 나서는 ‘아~ 편리한 기능이네~’하긴 했지만.

그래서 실제 써보니 어땠어?

번역 회사에서 실험 보고서 번역을 의뢰 하면서 트 * * * 로 해달라고 하더라고. 처음에는 나도 다운로드해서 설치하고 해야 하니 조금 번거로웠는데, 실제로 사용해보니 이번 프로젝트는 트 * * * 를 사용하는 것이 확실히 효율적이었어. 문서마다 반복되는 문장도 많고 통일되어야 하는 용어도 많다 보니까 도움이 많이 되더라고.

어떤 기능을 제일 많이 써?
LATTE
아무래도 ‘저장’이지.(ㅎㅎ) 사실 수업 때 배운 고급 기능까지는 쓸 겨를이 없어. 아직 그 정도로 데이터가 쌓이지도 않았고 트 * * * 를 쓰는 다른 번역사나 감수자에게 전달을 한다거나 하는 일이 없어서 그런지 모르겠지만. 일치율이 100%에 가까운 문장은 정말 사소한 띄어쓰기 정도만 눈으로 확인하고 저장을 누르면 되니까 작업이 빨라지긴해. 이번에 하는 실험 보고서 뿐만 아니라 계약서 같은 경우도 캣툴을 쓰는 게 좋을 것 같아.

맞아. 나도 예전에 계약서 번역 많이 했는데 계약서마다 항상 들어가는 관용구 같은 것이 있잖아. 할 때마다 ‘저번에 뭐라고 번역했더라?’ 하면서 예전 번역 파일을 뒤적였는데, 요즘 캣툴 쓸 때 마다 그때도 썼으면 좋았겠다는 생각 자주 해. 번역은 효율보다 정확도와 꼼꼼함이 중요하지만, 이런 경우에는 효율이 조금 높아지면 그만큼 정확도에 신경 쓸 수 있는 여유가 많아지니까 좋더라고.

I also once told a story in a lecture by an incumbent translator, who specialized only in the automotive field. However, I was a little surprised that most of the work was done with T* *, but recently I've heard why.

Me too. I even found a segment* with the same term, but I couldn't find a way to edit that segment all at once. So I applied it by pressing Change by segment. Is that because we haven't used too many basic features yet? (hehe)

(Hehe) If it really doesn't have that feature, it would be much easier to just translate something like this into Word.

That's right. Also, when the match rate is 100%, it's not a problem; otherwise, especially when it's ambiguous at 60 to 70%, you have to take a closer look than when translating initially. Because it's like making an inspection. You have to carefully compare the original text to see which part is wrong. If you don't, you'll be presented with a sentence that has already been translated somehow, so you'll have a rough look, and if you do, you'll make a mistake.

Even if the same term comes up in fiction or literature, there are times when it is necessary to make changes by deliberately translating it differently from the term written in the previous section, so there is no need to unify terms for modifiers such as adjectives other than people or place names, but in technical translation, unification of terms is really half of the translation. So use a cat tool I think I can avoid wasting time checking what terms were used earlier.
