Artificial intelligence imagined by the ancients was created by God or sent to humans. This is the case with Pandora and Talos, which is said to have been created by the blacksmith god Hephaestus that appeared in the last post. In other words, it seems that for the ancients, artificial intelligence was a blessing, disaster, or object of overcoming from God.
However, the examples we're going to look at this time have a slightly different meaning. It's a case where humans wanted to create an existence similar to themselves. However, since it is a story in myths and legends, the presence of God who intervened in human life is not missing.
Galatea, the artificial intelligence that helped me feel lonely
In Ovidius, <변신 이야기*> King Pygmalion of Cyprus is disappointed with real women and decides not to get married. Instead, he was also a sculptor, and he created “Galatea,” a statue of a woman with perfect beauty, and unbeknownst to him, he fell in love with the statue. When he fell in love, he prayed earnestly to Aphrodite and lived with Galatea, who became a real woman thanks to the goddess.
If so, can Galatea be considered a human?
Rather, it seems close to human creations becoming beings that can think, act, and feel emotions like humans. It's close to human-like artificial intelligence, or Android, that often appears in science fiction movies today. Also, I think of Real Doll Harmony**, equipped with AI technology created by Abyss Creations, when it comes to an entity that projects the desires of a lonely human being.
Golem, artificial intelligence that threatened humans
Golem*** is an artificial human made of clay from Jewish mythology. The most widely known of these is The Golem of Prague (The Golem of Prague), which appears in a story created by the 16th century Jewish rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (Judah Loew ben Bezalel). This golem originally played a role in protecting Jews, but one day it was overrun by a rabbi's mistake, causing death and destruction.
However, this golem is somehow similar to artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence has abilities that surpass humans, but it works like a faithful species for humans. There's also a risk of running amok like a golem in the near future. Stephen Hawking warned of the dangers of highly advanced artificial intelligence beyond human control.
During his lifetime, Hawking expressed concern, “I don't think advances in artificial intelligence will necessarily be beneficial to the future of humanity.” “Rogue (rogue) AI will not be easy to stop,” he said. I advised that there is a need to ethically design AI so that AI safety devices work properly. ****
Maybe the first artificial intelligence was a human?
“God made man in his image.” (Genesis 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 11:7; Eph 4:24; Colossians 3:10; James 3:9)
Christian tradition sees humans as beings created in the image of God.***** And humans, the creatures of God, also want to create beings that think like themselves, or artificial intelligence. If so, in a broad sense, maybe the first human, Adam, can also be seen as the first artificial intelligence?
Meanwhile, according to Sumerian mythology, the gods created humans as beings to work on their behalf. ****** It is said that people were made from river mud like golems. Also, today, like God, humans want to create an entity that can work for themselves, that is, artificial intelligence.
Other than this, if you look at the myths of the creation of humanity around the world, there are many similar stories from East to West. It is said that Yuwa*******, the creator of Chinese mythology, created humans as beings similar to herself. Looking at these examples, I don't know if humans have wanted to create artificial intelligence that resembles themselves, just like their creators did.
While finishing
Now, beyond beings similar to itself, humanity is trying to create beings that surpass itself. Humans, the creatures of God, are now about to become creators themselves. Therefore, artificial intelligence has all the potential to be a forbidden fruit that should not be touched, or a golden key to a better future.
Of course, it's impossible to accurately predict the future at this point. Therefore, opinions are probably divided even among experts. At the end of the day, I think that it depends on how we, the creators of artificial intelligence, do it, is close to the correct answer.
Therefore, a humanistic approach to artificial intelligence is necessary. This is because if you are too obsessed with the development of science and technology, you may miss other important things. Therefore, we should follow these “ideas that created artificial intelligence” and explore future standards and directions as well.
